Topics for August 29th

Today We Discussed:

We used models (number line and integer chips) and rules to add real numbers today.  We talked about the identity property of addition and also talked about inverses.  We also discussed how to use a number line to represent addition problems of both positive and negative integers.  Today's class was capped off with a game of Nim.  So far Mrs. Riccabona is still undefeated...

Topics for August 28th

Today We Discussed:

We are still working on the language of Algebra and using precise words.  Today we discussed the different classifications for numbers and what sets various types of numbers belong to (Natural, Whole, Integers, Rational, Irrational, and Real).  We also reviewed the meaning of absolute value.

Topics for August 27th

Today We Discussed:

As with any language, algebra has some basic rules that must be followed to arrive at a correct answer.  Sometimes there are multiple ways to express an answer or number so we need a set of rules to follow so we always arrive at the same answer for any one particular problem.  The order of operations is a set of rules that tells problem solvers which operations to perform and in what order.

Vocabulary: simplify, exponent, base, power, order of operations (PEMDAS), evaluate

Sections Covered in Textbook:

1-2: Exponents and Order of Operations (pages 9 - 16)

Resources & Tutorials:

What is the order of operations?
How to use the order of operations

Assignments:

1) Pages 12-14 #'s 11-33 odd, 39, 49, 50, 55, 57, 63
    (Optional Challenge - 76, 78)
2)  Have course syllabus signed and returned by Thursday.

Topics for August 26th

Today We Discussed:

What a great day!  Today we introduced ourselves and settled in to our classroom.  We discussed classroom rules and expectations, and how to best interact with each other during class.  Textbooks were handed out and we even played a strategy-based game called Nim.

Our Algebra lesson focused on some of the language of Algebra and how words can be translated into algebraic expressions.

Vocabulary:  variable, algebraic expression, equation, open sentence

Sections Covered in Textbook:

1-1: Using Variables (Pages 4-8)

Resources & Tutorials:

What are numerical and algebraic expressions?
Translating mathematical expressions

Assignments:

1) Play at least one game of Nim with a parent or friend.
2) Worksheet 1-1 (all problems).
3) Have course syllabus signed and returned by Thursday.

Welcome, Students!

Hello Field School Families,

I'm very excited to be teaching the Algebra I class this year, and to get to know all of my new students.  This blog will serve as a resource for families during the school year.  I will endeavor to post a daily summary of what we covered, as well as provide some other resources for students to use during times when they need assistance completing assignments.  If you have any questions or concerns, I invite you to get in touch with me.  I'm looking forward to a great year at Field School.
